The Three-Part Barrister Business Training Course

Based on the principles of The Barrister Business book, this three-part programme goes deeper, making the learning personal and directly relevant to barristers at every stage of practice.

Part One – Business Development

Not a natural salesperson? Discover what you can practically do to build your practice within the limited time you have as a self-employed professional. Learn how to work effectively with your clerking and practice team and explore realistic strategies for an expert who is not a “business developer” by trade.

Part Two – Business Retention

Getting your name on the next brief is a must. This module explores how to secure reinstructions, develop your professional “product,” and avoid common own goals that can quickly undo your hard work. Winning work is hard; keeping it is critical.

Part Three – Personal Branding

Who are you as a professional? What motivates you, and how do others see you? This module helps you understand your personal brand in depth, shows you how to maximise opportunities, and builds your confidence by simply being the best version of yourself.

Duration: 2.5–3 hours per module
Cost: £1,250 per module or £3,100 for all three booked together

Professional Presentation Skills

Whether speaking to clients, delivering seminars, or addressing wider audiences, barristers are expected to present with clarity, confidence, and impact. This practical session focuses on developing your capability to engage audiences effectively and communicate with assurance in any professional setting.

We explore how to:

  • Structure and prepare compelling presentations that hold attention and land key messages.
  • Apply practical techniques for confident delivery so you feel composed, credible, and assured.
  • Engage your audience effectively and make the very best use of the time and platform you have.

By the end of the session

You will feel more confident, credible, and comfortable delivering presentations in professional environments that goes beyond advocacy.

Professional Networking Skills

Networking is a critical skill for barristers, yet many find it uncomfortable or view it as a superficial exercise. In reality, effective networking is not about self-promotion; it is about building genuine professional relationships that support your practice over time.

In this session

This highly practical and confidence-building session will show you how to:

  • Maximise your time at events by knowing where to focus your energy and make the most of the time you have invested.
  • Build rapport quickly and naturally to create authentic connections without feeling forced or rehearsed.
  • Overcome nerves and anxieties by managing self-doubt and approaching networking with calm assurance.
  • Develop your personal magnetism through subtle techniques that help you leave a positive and memorable impression.

By the end of the session

You will understand how to build and sustain a professional network that genuinely works for you. You will gain practical tools to engage with clients and peers more effectively and perhaps even start to enjoy going to networking events.

Each course is bespoke to the culture of the self-employed Bar. We aim for our sessions to be concise, impactful, and tailored to fit around busy practices.

Sessions are normally run, in-house, in the evenings, but we can also deliver at a time that suits you.
